Inspiring Team Building Quotes for your next meeting

Team meetings can too often fizzle, rather than ignite. I don’t like meetings, but I do like quick huddles (anywhere from five to 20 minutes) for checking in, messaging and motivating the team.

It might sound a little lame at first, but quotes can be a good way to start, or end, a meeting (I like kicking off with a quote and a very brief discussion on the quote’s message).

Coach Vince Lombardi couldn’t help himself with those inspirational quotes

Invariably the brief discussion goes way off the rails, in a good way, which is in itself, fun team building. But that said; don’t underestimate the power of team building quotes as a way to create conversation around leadership, collaboration, morale and to inspire.
(or the power of a well-designed Team Building Workshop)

Here are a few Team Building Quotes that could be a fit for your next team huddle:

“There is no “I” in “Team”
 – unknown
(kidding. This one doesn’t count and might be the least inspirational, most over-used “team” quote in the English language. Interesting side note, I used to work with a guy who was a contractor, and when he would hand in his monthly bill, he liked to say, “there is no “I” in team…but there are two of them in “invoice” –  not overly inspirational but kind of funny).

Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much
 -Helen Keller
(actually, you can accomplish an amazing amount on your own, but it is all relative and we completely agree with Helen, one of the most inspirational figures in history. This quote captures the very essence of improv-based team building workshops – building on a single idea, you’ll be amazed at what can happen when you take a “Yes, and” approach and push that idea to its full potential as a team).

The strength of the team is each member. The strength of each member is the team.”
Phil Jackson
(The Zen-master himself. When he was winning championships with Chicago, quotes like these were printed on high school basketball locker rooms all over the world. Phil’s stint with the Knicks shows that it’s easier to be a genius when you can roll out Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen for 42 minutes a game, but that aside, he came up with a great quote which embodies the team concept).

It is amazing how much people get done if they do not worry about who gets the credit.”
– Swahili proverb
(Making others look good, being a supportive, positive teammate – those are core principles in what makes improv work (and part of what we highlight in our corporate sessions). It’s incredible to see how a team can flourish when they truly embrace this).

“It is the long history of humankind (and animal kind) that those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed.”
– Charles Darwin
(even Darwin, with the whole “survival of the fittest” ethos, understood the importance of collaboration and being a supportive and flexible teammate)

“Individual commitment to a group effort–that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”
–Vince Lombardi
(Another sports quote – they’re hard to avoid when featuring “team building” quotes – but this is a great one from the legendary coach. There’s a reason the Super Bowl trophy carries his name. This is classic Lombardi)

“Great teams do not hold back with one another. They admit their mistakes, their weaknesses, and their concerns without fear of reprisal.”
– Patrick Lencioni
(open and honest communication – to a point – is a key to building great teams).

“When he took time to help the man up the mountain, lo, he scaled it himself.”
-Tibetan Proverb
(this one might not resonate with the Sherpas who summit Everest as a footnote while carrying the gear for the person getting all the credit, but setting that aside, you get the picture – support your teammates and you all succeed.)

 “Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone”
 – as sung by Liverpool FC supporters

(seeing and hearing the song performed by a massed chorus of Liverpool fans, as they join together in this shared experience, is damn inspiring. Show this to your team one day, whether they like European “footy” or not).

Good luck if you choose to roll out one of these Team Building Quotes the next time you get your team together
