If you've ever wanted to learn how to improvise on stage, this is your chance! Dad's Garage Theatre is proud to offer a new class system taught by our own ensemble of seasoned improvisors. We've recently doubled our offerings and expanded our curriculum, so whether you're an aspiring improvisor, you want to speak more confidently at work, or you're just looking for a new creative outlet - we've got the right track for you.

Dad's Garage offers four class sessions, four times per year. The LEVEL 1 class is open to people of all skill levels, and no previous experience is needed. The next 3 levels require completion of the previous class or equivalent experience (to be determined by our instructors). The LEVEL 4 class will finish with a Class Graduation Show in which the students will have a chance to perform on our stage in front of a live audience.

LEVEL 1: Fundamentals of Improv - an introduction to improv basics and theory

Level 1 is designed to teach the basics of improv theory and group mind. It is the foundation for the work you will perform in future classes. This class will prepare students looking for a continued improv education as well as appeal to professionals looking for different ways to approach public speaking and interpersonal dynamics in the work place. The focus is on group dynamics, trust and reaction as opposed to scene work, storytelling and stage presence.

LEVEL 2: Narrative Storytelling - building and developing dynamic scenes

Level 2 is designed to teach methods for narrative storytelling as it applies to scene work and short form improv. It is in this level that the ABC's of improv are really worked and the "rules" of improv are taught (dealing with bad habits and pitfalls). Improvisers learn the truth of what they create on stage and how to own that creation.

LEVEL 3: Character Development - learning to make strong character choices

Level 3 is designed to take what has been gained in Level 1 and 2 and layer that with character development skills. With and emphasis being placed on good storytelling, students learn how to tell stories as the characters that they create and embody.

LEVEL 4: Performance Skills - preparing and honing skills for the stage

Level 4 is designed to bring all of the work done in the previous levels together, with an emphasis on techniques specific to performing for an audience. In this level, students learn games and show formats that are appropriate for audiences as well as hone their performance skills. This level wraps up with a Theatersports graduation show for an audience.

Class enrollment is limited to 12 people. The cost of the each class is $210 payable by cash or check. Due to high demand, a non-refundable $100 deposit is required 10 days before the session begins in order to hold your spot. The remainder of the money is due by the first day of class. Volunteer discounts must be verified internally and applied before the class begins.

Our in-house classes run on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7:00pm - 9:00pm. Each session is 8 weeks long, one night per week.
